Strategies, Variations, Achievements, and Game Changers at Rob Nielsen's Game Night!
Congratulations to Megan for her win last night with Tyrolane at Rob Nielsen's game night, part 2! Saw some incredible upsets, firsts, and fabulous strategies last night.
After 20 years of requests from players, we played the first game that allowed pieces to Attack and then Move. I was able to first hand see some serious benefits to that suggestion.
The 1st drama began when I moved Saeline's bishop the full length of the 8-player board, through the middle of Sabra's army, to end up behind her. Saeline then teleported in and used her Magic, decimating Sabra's army. Saeline was outside the reach of Sabra's Combat and Firing range - but not her Magic's throw scroll range. Sabra's weak magic was enough to capture Saeline's bishop, cutting off her retreat, and then her head as well.
The 2nd major upset was when Tyrolane's yellow queen failed to capture a magic-less Sabra in the several moves it took her to regain her magic. It was a bit of a race to the center, with a yellow Pawn 1 space away and the yellow Queen blasting Sabra as she went along. Only Sabra's incredible hunting ability kept her in the game. The yellow Pawn tried to combat Sabra by stepping into the center of the board, giving it the opportunity to promote to another piece. It failed to Combat Sabra and she regained her magic, throwing it at the harassing queen to capture it. The pawn then promoted-becoming the queen itself! Since Main Heroes can only regain their magic once, Sabra retreated to the remains of her army in the hopes of capturing the queen with a traditional chess move. However, it was not meant to be, granting Tyrolane another victory.
Big, major kudos and thanks to Rob Nielson for allowing us to play last night and for the major, jaw-dropping strategy suggestions.
A mind-blowing thanks to Amber for the incredible Additional Variation suggestion of the 'Round World' (name suggested by Rob) eliminating borders - allowing pieces to move off the board and reappear on the other side! No army would be safe!
